The Eagle Festival or Golden Eagle Festival is an annual traditional festival held in Bayan-Ulgii aimag, Mongolia. In the eagle festival, Kazakh eagle hunters (Burkitshi) celebrate their heritage and compete to catch small animals such as foxes and hares with specially trained golden eagles, showing off the skills both of the birds and their trainers. The Eagle Festival is held during the first weekend in October, run by the Mongolian Eagle Hunter\'s Association. Dark, rocky mountainous terrain forms the backdrop to the festivities which incorporate an opening ceremony, parade, cultural exhibitions, demonstrations and handcrafts in the centre of town of Ulgii followed by sporting activities and competitions 4 km out towards the mountains. Dressed in full eagle hunting regalia and mounted on groomed decorated horses, the entrants compete for the awards of Best Turned Out Eagle and Owner; Best Eagle at Hunting Prey and Best Eagle at Locating Its Owner from a Distance. Other sporting activities include horse racing, archery and the highly entertaining Bushkashi - goatskin tug of war on horseback. A smaller festival, the Altai Kazakh Eagle Festival is also held each year in the nearby village of Sagsai in the last week of September. It follows much the same pattern as the larger Golden Eagle Festival, with about 40 eagle hunters participating.

  • Day 1: Fly to Bayan-Ulgii province – Drive to Lake Khoton and Khurgan (2,200mabove sea level)

    Our driver will pick up from your hotel and drop you off at the airport and then we’ll fly to Bayan-Ulgii province. After we arrive, we will then drive to west part of Bayan-Ulgii province for about 195kms and by late afternoon we will reach Khurgan Nuur (Lake) and Hoton Nuur, where many Nomadic Kazakh families spend their summer. But they will have already moved to their winter quarters before the 1st of September. We’ll have a lunch near small mountains on the shore of the lake, which is located 12kms from the wooden bridge to the north. There are many rock arts. Along the lakes, we’ll see the beautiful rock-arts and some ancient Turkic stones with a face. On the right side, we see the snowcapped mountains with a forest, in which makes the wall between China and Mongolia.

  • Day 2: Drive to Dayan Lake (2,400m above sea level)

    We’ll be driving to the south for 3-4hrs, when we arrive at Dayan Lake you’ll see crystal clear transparent waters. The lake is great for fishing for Lenok Trout (Lenok brachymystax) and Grayling (Thymallus arcticus) of which Mongolia has four species, and in this area, the largest of all Graylings of the circumpolar to the north. You can see spectacular sunsets and sunrises here. The lake is rich in bird life of ducks, Whooper Swans, geese, cormorants, and seagulls. We will have a picnic lunch on the shore of the lake. We’ll explore around the lake for archeological sites. We will stay overnight with a family near the lake.

  • Day 3: Drive to Khargant Valley towards Tuva family

    We will drive through the Khargant Valley, below Tsengel Khairhan Uul (3043m) - snow-capped mountains. The Tuvan’s live here in this area. They are Buddhists, but of a Turkic-speaking ethnic group. Their gers (yurts) are more like Mongolian gers as opposed to the larger Kazakh ones. There are also some shaman practitioners among them. We will stay an overnight with this family.

  • Day 4: Kazakh Eagle hunting and Nomadic life

    You will stay in Kazakh felt ger near Kazakh Eagle Hunter's family for a whole day. We’ll have a great opportunity to learn some Kazakh Eagle hunting skills from them. We’ll ride horses while hunting for 3-4 hrs with the Eagle hunters. Also, we will visit Kazakh Nomadic Families to learn their regular day life and feel their great hospitality.

  • Day 5: and Day 6: Eagle Festival

    The Eagle Festival or Golden Eagle Festival is an annual traditional festival held in Bayan-Ulgii province, in Mongolia. In the Eagle Festival, Kazakh eagle hunters celebrate their heritage and compete to catch small animals such as foxes and hares with specially trained golden eagles, showing off the skills both of the birds and their trainers.
    Accommodation: Ger-Camp (with modern shower and facilities)

  • Day 7: Tolbo lake

    Today we will drive to the Tolbo Lake. It’s is about 50km south of Ulgii.The saltwater lake is high (2080m) the shoreline is treeless and the water is clean enough for swimming if you don't mind icy temperatures. Here we will visit Uriankhai tribe family and learn from their culture. Accommodation: Ger Meals: BF, L, D

  • Day 8: Fly back to the city of Ulaanbaatar

    After breakfast, we’ll drive to the Bayan Ulgii airport (45km) and fly back to Ulaanbaatar.
